MEMS collaboration accelerates time to market for optical components

Keywords: MEMS, optical

Colibrys SA and Coventor, Inc. have announced that they have entered into Joint Development and Preferred Manufacturing Partnership agreements for the development of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). The relationship will provide one- stop, reliable, rapid, cost-effective development for companies creating products enabled by MEMS. The partners will focus initially on MEMS for optical communications, developing device building blocks that can be applied across many optical applications.

The first demonstrations of their common design and process technology platform will be steerable mirror arrays and optical shutters. Evaluation samples and performance data are scheduled for 1Q2002. Mirror arrays and shutters can be configured into products such as small- and large-scale optical switches, OADMs, channel equalizers, and attenuators.

"Both companies bring deep experience in optical MEMS design that we can use synergistically to accelerate MEMS development for our customers," said Sean Neylon, CEO of Colibrys. "Coventor brings MEMS Development PlatformsTM, market knowledge, and design expertise. We bring manufacturing capability – from processing through test and assembly – that has already successfully produced optical MEMS products."

"Our choice of a fabless business model allows us to select the best manufacturers for each type of MEMS product. We are excited about working with Colibrys to develop a variety of integratable, cost-effective MEMS building blocks for the optical market," said Mike Jamiolkowski, Coventor's CEO.

In addition Colibrys SA also announced today the selection of CoventorWareTM as their software of choice for MEMS (micro- electro-mechanical systems) and MOEMS (micro-optical-electro-mechanical systems). Beginning immediately, Colibrys will use CoventorWareTM to develop custom MEMS for optical telecom as well as for MEMS diffractive optics, accelerometers, and sensors.

Colibrys' goal is an integrated design and manufacturing environment that offers one-stop MEMS solutions.
