Non-contact position sensors
Keyword: Position sensing
Winner of the prestigious Best of Sensors Expo award, the revolutionary non-contact position sensors from Gill can be seen in action at Sensors and Measurement Instrumentation 2001 (mtec).
Highly versatile, flexible, robust and suitable for the harshest of environments, these innovative non-contact position sensors are available at a very competitive price that makes potentiometers and many hall-effect sensors redundant. Ideal for applications such as control pedals, levers, actuators, vehicle transmission position sensing and many more, Gill NCPS provide a reliable low cost solution. The sensors have unlimited duty cycle rating, can be pressure washed, and above all are incredibly simple to use (see Plate 6).

The non-contact position sensors themselves have no moving parts whatsoever, but sense the position of a steel "activator" attached to (or formed as part of) the sensed assembly, using a unique, patented inductive detection concept. Activator movement can be linear, rotary or angular and different output characteristics can be achieved by varying the shape of the activator. Leading manufacturers, who already use the Gill sensor, have found that significant production savings can be made, as no mechanism is required to couple the sensor to the moving part.
