Digital GSM telemetry modem

Westermo Data Communications has announced the release of a 900MHz digital GSM modem, suitable for remote industrial telemetry and mobile applications.
The availability of the GS-01 modem coincides with the announcement that Vodafone is soon to discontinue its analogue service (see Plate 2).
The GS-01 is extremely easy to use – simply remove the mini-SIM card from a Vodafone or Cellnet GSM mobile phone, and slide it into the modem. RS-232/V.24 connection up to 9,600 bits/s is then available on a worldwide basis (excluding the USA).

The modem is constructed from profiled aluminium, and is therefore extremely robust, making it ideal for use in hostile field environments. A single 5 to 32V supply is required, and the operating temperature range can vary from –20°C to +55°C.
Applications will include unmanned remote sites, e.g. water and power company field sites. It can also be used instead of serial cable to link PLCs, data loggers, security and surveillance systems. The device lends itself to remote equipment monitoring.
An external signal (DTR) can be used to trigger the modem to call a pre-set number. This makes it ideal for alarm monitoring and remote diagnostics. It is also possible to send/receive an SMS message of up to 160 characters.
It can connect with other GSM-modems, and also with traditional analogue modems or ISDN-adaptors.
The received signal-strength test function makes it easy to check service quality at the location. High-power antennae are available for use in fringe-coverage areas.
