Advanced Polymer Chemistry: A Problem-solving Guide is exactly that, a comprehensive text providing thorough discussion and numerous examples of the detailed chemistry, kinetics and mechanisms of polymer synthesis. Assuming a basic knowledge of physics, chemistry and mathematics, this book is suitable for undergraduate and graduate students from various disciplines in science and engineering.

The first chapter introduces the concepts and definitions of polymer science. It is followed by an analysis of chain dimensions, structures and transitional phenomena. Chapter 3, "Polymers in solution", presents topics including the thermodynamics of liquid mixtures, the van Laar model for low molecular weight mixtures, the Flory-Huggins model for polymer-solvent mixtures, phase equilibria in poor solvents, and the frictional properties of polymer molecules in dilute solution.

Chapter 4 discusses "Polymer molecular weights" and introduces molecular weight averages, dilute solution viscometry, and gel permeation chromatography. "Condensation (step-growth) polymerisation" is addressed in the following chapter, while "Radical chain polymerisation" is discussed in chapter 6. The binary copolymer equation, different types of copolymerisation, random-alternating copolymerisation, monomer and radical reactivities, resonance effects, and block graft copolymerisation are presented in chapter 7, "Chain copolymerisation".

Chapters 8 and 9 discuss "Ionic chain polymerisation", and "Co-ordination addition polymerisation", respectively. Topics covered include termination reactions, cationic initiation, Ziegler-Natta catalysts, bimetallic and monometallic mechanisms, adsorption models, and supported metal oxide catalysts. The final chapter presents "Ring-opening polymerisation" and includes discussion about polymerisation mechanisms and kinetics, anionic polymerisation of epoxides, cationic polymerisation of cyclic ethers, and polymerisation of Lactams.

This well written book contains two appendices containing a unit conversion table (customary to SI) and a list of fundamental constants (both CGS and SI systems).
