Ircon has extended its range of Ultimax Plus infra-red cameras to include fixed focus models, the UX-50, UX-60 and UX-70 (see Plate 8). Each camera in the family covers a different spectral range. The UX-70 is a special two-colour version that is designed to measure small targets, targets that have a partially obstructed field of view, or when energy from the target is obscured by smoke or dust in the atmosphere.

All of the cameras feature Centigrade or Fahrenheit scales, ±1°C accuracy and repeatability (either scale), and single lens reflex (SLR) operation. They have fixed focus at 4 metres and all feature an optical resolution of D/200. The measurable temperature range across the family is from 400°C to 3,000°C with a response time of 200mS. The user simply aims the camera at the target and presses a button to capture the temperature data. A time interval mode can be selected to store up to 500 datapoints continuously at one second intervals and this is ideal for preventive maintenance. Users can select emissivity from 0.1 to 1.9 in 0.001 steps and decay rates of 0, 2, 5, or 10 degrees per second, all with a simple push-button.
Some 20 hours of continuous operation are possible with standard AA batteries and an AC adapter is also supplied. The cameras switch off automatically after 30 seconds.
The UX-50, UX-60 and UX-70 have digital (RS232) interfaces and come complete with data analysis software for a PC. Data can be graphed, saved, displayed or exported directly into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. An integral LCD display can also be used to view data, and an ambient light sensor is used to provide automatic back lighting of the display.
The wide temperature range and hand-held portability of these cameras make them suitable for a very wide variety of applications in processing, manufacturing, maintenance, test and quality control. They weigh just 700g without batteries and dimensions are 148mm W x 100mm H x 70mm D.
