New software for expert wrench is easy to use

Keywords Software, Programming, Control systems

Ingersoll-Rand has launched new INTERLINK software, an easy-to-use program for use with the company's EXPERT line of Electronic Wrenches. The INTERLINK program can be used as a control system for managing Expert wrenches in every environment from production and laboratory use to quality control. On-line help is available at all stages to provide simple, understandable explanations to guide the user through the entire process (see Plate 6).

Plate 6 Ingersoll-Rand has launched new INTERLINK software, an easy-to-use program that can be used as a control system for managing the company's EXPERT line of wrenches in every environment from production and laboratory use to quality control

The user follows the clear step-by-step screens in the INTERLINK program to name the wrench, set up fastening strategies, program the wrench or analyse data. When the wrench is connected again to the computer while the software is running, the system will automatically detect the wrench type, name, serial number and calibration date. INTERLINK software therefore provides a means of tracking tightening data as it is permanently and automatically tied to a particular wrench.

After a wrench has been programmed by the software, the INTERLINK summary feature allows the user to view and print a summary of all parameters in the wrench. The software reduces wrench programming time, as any tightening and auditing procedure that can be set up on the wrench can also be programmed through the software and either saved to a database and/or downloaded to the wrench.

The on-board storage of torque-angle plot points in the wrench will interface with the INTERLINK software to easily plot, print and save tightening curve data. The software can also be used to plot and analyse a problem fastener or a new application. In addition, the INTERLINK software allows the user to transport data into other PC programs with ease, as tightening and plot data can be exported as an ASCII text file to be stored or analysed by software on another desktop system.

The EXPERT range is intended for specialist applications such as developing fastening strategies; on-line quality auditing; prototype or low volume assembly work and SPC quality control and data collection. EXPERT wrenches can help to avoid manufacturing problems caused by fasteners being attached without sufficient tightness or over-tightness.

The EXPERT Electronic Wrench is far more capable than operator-dependent hand torque wrenches and is the perfect supplement to power tool assembly lines, whether basic or advanced. The Expert wrench is the only tool of its type that detects the yield point of the fastener, allowing the operator to gain control of fastening operations by setting standards, auditing performance and monitoring repairs.

The EXPERT range is just one of a complete selection of solutions for assembly and fastening applications from the Fastener Tightening Systems Division of Ingersoll-Rand. These solutions are based on in-depth evaluations of fastening strategies and ergonomic issues and involve a range of products from basic air tools to sophisticated DC electric systems.
