New temperature transmitters for all occasions

Keywords Temperature, Transmitters, Accuracy

A new range of temperature transmitters being introduced by Conax Buffalo Technologies comprises models offering varying degrees of sophistication, from head-mounted, "hockey puck" styles to a top-flight HART1 SMART protocol device. These state-of-the-art transmitters combine simplicity, precision and ruggedness for accurate measurements in countless temperature sensing applications.

The new exciting development includes a low cost, non-isolated transmitter for two or three wire Pt100 resistance thermometers. It provides two-wire, 4-20mA outputs and accepts an input span from 20°C to 500°C for Pt100's. Conax Buffalo Technologies is able to supply an isolated version, for use with both Pt100's and all types of thermocouples.

A PC programmable, head-mounted, "hockey puck" style transmitter is also being announced. Inputs can be accepted from all standard types of thermocouple as well as two-, three- and four-wire resistance thermometers including Pt100, Ni100 and a number of other types. Special types of thermocouples and RTDs can be accommodated using customer-defined tables and polynomials. All input types and range parameters are easily configurable with the user friendly technology which requires no power supply for configuration using the programming adaptor unit and the user interface software under Windows (registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation) operating systems through a PC's RS232 serial port. Software is provided with the transmitter.

The most sophisticated model currently available is the Conax HART SMART (trademark of Rosemount, Inc.) isolated two-wire transmitter that provides universal input capability to accept most process parameters. This device is software driven and all input conditions are programmed using an external hand-held programmer, an integral transmitter-mounted programmer (with LCD display), or, a HART protocol hand-held device.

To ensure acceptance into the market all models feature a heavy-duty metal case construction and state-of-the art input and output circuitry which gives the essential protection from adverse environmental conditions and maximising of RFI/EMI immunity (see Plate 10).
