Dennis darts ahead with Faro 'turnkey system'
Keywords Calibration, Inspection
Continuing the succession of prominent automotive industry members to discover the benefits of a 3D measuring solution supplied by FARO UK is Dennis - the UK's leading bus, coach and fire appliance chassis manufacturer. As part of Dennis' continuous improvement program, the company has introduced a FaroArm® Silver Series "turnkey system" to its Quality Management Department.
Home of Europe's best selling midi-bus, the Dart SLF (Super Low Floor) - hailed as the bus industry success story of the 1990s - Guildford-based Dennis introduced FARO's portable coordinate measuring arm and bundled CAD-based AnthroCAM® software initially as an accurate and adaptable means of assembly inspection.
In addition to minimising quality inspection set-up times by up to two thirds, the FaroArm's onboard temperature compensation device eliminated the need for a thermostatically controlled environment. Together with the Silver Series' flexibly manoeuvrable six degrees of freedom, Dennis' turnkey system also proved immediately invaluable for jig callibration and for "shop floor" fit-check troubleshooting (see Plate 9).

Explained Dennis' Quality Manager, Barry Gravett: "Prior to implementing the FaroArm 'turnkey system', available measuring instruments dictated that assemblies be inspected in a dedicated area. Consequently, the combination of spatial confines and two dimensional apparatus led to procedures becoming excessively laborious and time consuming.
"The freedom with which the FaroArm enables us to take measurements of complex assemblies quickly and accurately in situ has not only transformed many of our existing working practices but has also stimulated numerous possibilities for the system's alternative application", he continued.
All FaroArm series are available as individual arms or as a complete FaroArm "turnkey system" package, which includes FARO's unique AnthroCAM software, lap-top computer, training and one year standard warranty.
