Force measurement specialist Thames Side-Maywood has developed a miniature tension-compression load cell only 35mm high (Plate 11). The new U4100 is ideally suited for direct mounting in material testing machines or other low range force measuring applications where space is at a minimum. Other uses of the new design have included multi-axis test rigs and medical instrumentation.

The dual-cantilever sensing element in each load cell is machined from a high performance alloy. which exhibits excellent strength characteristics. Foil strain gauges are strategically placed to minimise the unwanted effects of side forces and non-axial forces. The cell is fully compensated for thermal effects and displays low deflection of only 0.05 per cent under load.

The U4100 measures forces from 50N to 500N in both tension and compression applications.
