Low-cost surface mount pressure sensor
Low-cost surface mount pressure sensor
Keywords: Pressure, Pressure sensors
The Model 1451, manufactured by EG&G IC Sensors, is available throughout mainland Europe from EuroSensor (Plate 8 ). This piezo-resistive silicon pressure sensor comes packaged in a surface mount configuration and intended for high volume applications where small size, light weight, low-cost and compatibility with automated assembly equipment is required.
Plate 8Model 1451 surface mount pressure sensor
The pressure sensor is available with a gauge or absolute pressure-sensing chip that is attached to a surface mountable ceramic substrate and available with either a large or small hole in the cap or a small pressure port integral to the cap. The cap is attached to the substrate to protect the chip while also providing the pressure port.
Performance characteristics: full scale outputs span: 60mV; non-linearity: + 0.25 per cent; pressure hysteresis: +0.1 per cent span (typ); I/O resistance: 5k O (typ); operating temperature range: -40° to +125°C; storage temperature range: -55° to +150°.
The unit is unique, in that it is a mere silicone chip presented as a discrete component and yet is probably the smallest complete SMD-type pressure assembly available in the world today.
This high specification solid-state device affords pressures in five defined ranges from 5-100psia/psig, along with three pressure port options.
The device is suitable for applications covering:
- •
altitude measurement;
- •
medical instrumentation;
- •
tyre pressure measurement;
- •
barometric pressure;
- •
consumer appliances; and
- •
diving watches.
