Poole-based, Sixth Sense, is a market leader in the design and manufacture of sensors for the gas detection industry. In an exciting move, Sixth Sense has recently teamed up with Cheshire-based detector manufacturer A2Z (UK) Ltd. The result is a carbon monoxide (CO) detector that is the first of its type in the UK (Plate 6).

At the heart of the CO detector is the Midi 40 electrochemical cell from Sixth Sense. The Midi 40 is already well proven, being used extensively in residential and commercial CO detectors. The cell has been designed to work in apparatus approved to BS 7860 and UL2034, the standards for carbon monoxide in the UK and USA. Sixth Sense is also paying close attention to emerging European standards. The Midi 40, by producing its own power supply, also gives manufacturers of CO detectors the option to use battery power. The combination of unprecedented long-term stability and zero power consumption allows five-year guarantees, using just one 9V battery.

The CO detector itself is part of A2Z's Professional Plus range. Designed to operate on a low current 12V DC, four-wire line and with a common 12/24V power base the detector allows wholesalers to promote the product to installers of current security alarm systems. All models in the range have a built-in relay that allows for a variety of connection options and an LED provides visual indication of the alarm status.
