CODEL International announces the introduction of PyroSonic II, acoustic pyrometer, to their advanced range of combustion monitoring instrumentation (see Plate 9). Developed in conjunction with Sheffield University and Blue Circle Cement with Funding from the Energy Efficiency Best Practice Programme, CODEL has designed a superb ultrasonic temperature sensor capable of measuring gas at temperatures up to 2,000°C in aggressive environments.

Plate 9 PyroSonic II the new acoustic pyrometer from CODEL International

PyroSonic II operates by projecting a coded sound wave across a hot void. By dividing the time of flight of the sound pulse by the known distance between transmitter and receiver the velocity of the sound can be calculated. Thereafter, by compensating for the gas composition, a very accurate determination of average temperature along the sound path can be computed by state of the art control unit.

Because PyroSonic II uses a non-contact technology, none of the key components is affected by hot and aggressive gases. In trials at Blue Circle Hope works, the instrument proved to be very accurate and returned a 100 per cent availability record. To prevent the ingress of any corrosive gas, dust or slag, PyroSonic II is fitted with a pair of air blasters which purge the mounting tubes at regular intervals.

PyroSonic II measures over a path length of up to eight meters and is equipped with alarm and data valid contacts as well as a 4-20mA output. Applications for this superb new technology include secondary air recovery from cement clinker coolers, replacing retractable probes for the measurement of furnace exit temperatures during boiler startup and measuring the final gas temperature on incinerators, in fact, anywhere where there are high temperatures and hostile environments.
