In 1997, Meta Technology forecast for 1997/98 a 100 per cent increase in sales of its range of Tracker Laser seam tracking units for welding machines. This followed a 100 per cent increase in the previous year.
In the year 1995/96, when the unit was predominantly targeted at robot welding, 22 units were sold.
The future, the major market was perceived to be for conventional automatic welding machines. After a complete revamp that not only reduced the price, but also greatly simplified operation, the product was modified to be suitable for this application, claims Meta Technology Ltd. This redirection saw sales increase to 54 units in 1996/97.
With a financial year starting 1 July, 33 units were shipped in the first third of 1997/98. This period includes July/August, the traditionally quiet months in Europe, which represents over 80 per cent sales. Meta are confidently forecasting to break 100 for the year.
Mike Wilson, managing director at Meta said: "Once a user has a system, he quickly proves for himself the benefits of de-skilling welding and eliminated re-work. Payback on investment is usually under one year. Virtually every Meta user has multiple installations or will have in the near future. That says it all".
