The new European Standard BS EN 50 170, the CENELEC approved fieldbus standard due for publication in June 1997, was finally made available in the UK by the British Standards Institution (BSI), on 2 December 1977.
The proven technologies of three established fieldbus standards: P-NET, PROFIBUS and WorldFIP, all originally national standards, are embodied in the three-volume 2,000-page document. This makes it a pioneering product, based on the combined experience of many years development and protocol utilisation. Its three component specifications account for around half of Europe's combined installed fieldbus base.
From factory automation to process control, building management to transportation, EN 50 170 addresses the digital communication and control requirements of a broad range of industries. A fully fledged fieldbus standard, it is supported by over 200 manufacturers, collectively offering some 2,000 products, making for the provision of industrial solutions spanning virtually any application.
The full specification, BS EN 50 170: "General Purpose Field Communication System", can be purchased from: BSI at: 389, Chiswick High Road, London, W4 4AL. Alternatively, BSI Customer Services can be contacted via: Tel: +44 0181 996 9000. The price is £159 to BSI members; £319 to non-members.
