How to grow: a special report on the world economy

Article Type: Abstracts From: Strategic Direction, Volume 27, Issue 3

In a series of articles, reviews the current state of the world economy, looking at the capacity for economic growth and the danger of stagnation, and assessing the likely outcomes. Discusses the situation in the USA and Europe following on from the economic stimulus, noting that many people have begun to save rather than spend and asking if this is the right time to tighten up on government spending. Assesses the rate of growth that can be expected in the world’s financial sector, looking at the health of the banks and the impact of the new rules passed to prevent a similar banking crisis happening again. Looks at the likely levels of employment and unemployment, the mix of skills that will be required in future and if labour markets are in a position to supply these. An inset in this section discusses labour reform in Spain. Underlines the role that productivity growth will play in the economic revival of the richer economies and discusses how this can be achieved. Lastly considers the risks associated with fiscal austerity, looking at whether deep cuts in public spending are wise.Article type: Viewpoint ISSN: 0013-0613 Reference: 39BB463
