Purpose – Investigates a strategic alliance comprising nine leading companies in the machine-tool industry of Taiwan from 2003 to 2004 to assess the value of the alliance for advancing research and development (R&D). Findings – The results indicated that the structural equivalence model works only at the stage of technology diffusion, while cohesion models and in particular the friendship tie, influence both technology diffusion and homogeneity of improved capability. Concludes that the cohesive workflow tie and friendship tie play complementary roles in the early stage of the alliance, and the way that companies connect to others generates independence from and control over others within a workflow network, thereby benefiting the technology diffusion in terms of use and use attitude.Article type: Research paperISSN: 0953-7325Reference: 38AZ441
