Purpose – Studies the traditional approaches to corporate strategy and suggest a new approach, termed “blue ocean” strategies. Design/methodology/approach – The conventional approach used by executives in developing corporate strategy, in which they generally begin by analyzing the industry or environmental conditions in which they operate and the strengths and weaknesses of the players they are opposing, is discussed to show how the aim is to carve out a distinctive strategic position from which the company can outperform their rivals by building a competitive advantage. Argues that there are two types of strategy involved in this conventional view: structuralist strategies that assume that the operating environment is given; and reconstructionist strategies that seek to shape the environment.ISSN: 0017-8012Article type: ViewpointReference: 38AU214
