Purpose – to examine the role of knowledge management (KM) in providing a company with new growth opportunities through corporate entrepreneurship. Design/methodology/approach – a review of the literature of corporate entrepreneurship based on KM is presented. Presents a case study, based on a Spanish company, Tecnobit, to determine the pattern of its corporate diversification and those factors which have contributed to its recent success. Describes the gathering of case study data, using a wide range of information sources relating to Tecnobit’s major lines of business activity (avionics, optronics, command and control systems, simulation, information systems (IS)). Focuses on Tecnobit’s corporate entrepreneurship strategy and those factors that have contributed to its success in allowing the company to grow successfully. Findings – the results indicated that the major drivers of the company’s success have included: IT and KM; organizational structure; cooperative agreements and purchase of companies; and human resources practices for organizational KM. Originality/value – reveals how a significant number of opportunities are emerging for companies to diversify by creating new products based on IT and KM and to extend the existing technologies to new markets and businesses through KM.
