Second 3rd party responsible care certification

BASF Coatings Ltd, based in Flintshire, North Wales report that it has been awarded Third Party Certification as part of the Chemical Industries Association's (CIA) Responsible Care Initiative and that BASF is only the second company in the UK to achieve this status. The award – for excellence in the management of safety, health and environmental (SHE) performance – was granted by BSI, the global product certification and quality assurance organisation, which conducted the review of BASF Coatings Ltd on behalf of the CIA.

BSI's audit took into account how the company operates, how it manages all aspects of SHE and how best to improve on this. The audit also looked at communication, training, awareness and operational procedures.

Launched in March 2000, this CIA scheme aims to highlight chemical companies commitment to continual improvement in SHE performance through Third Party.

Certification. These formal assessments of companies, carried out by independent certification bodies, like BSI, are voluntary, building on self-assessment and are a response to public pressure. Responsible Care is a voluntary initiative developed by chemical companies world-wide under the auspices of the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) to continuously improve the health, safety and environmental performance of their operations and products. Self- assessment is a mandatory requirement of chemical firms for membership of the CIA whereas third party assessment is a voluntary step that so far only BASF and one other company have chosen to complete.
