Regional elections point to government woes in Chile
Wednesday, October 30, 2024
Significance
Held approximately one year before the next presidential election, these elections have historically provided a good indication of the likely colour of the next government. By November 15, government ministers intending to run in the November 2025 parliamentary elections must stand down, making an early cabinet reshuffle highly likely.
Impacts
- The election results reflect and may further dent President Gabriel Boric’s low approval ratings.
- The run-offs for governor of eleven of 16 regions will be another early test of the popularity of the government and opposition coalitions.
- A bid for a third term by Socialist former President Michelle Bachelet cannot be ruled out, although she has indicated otherwise.
