NanoKTN held their first Nanotechnology in Medical Devices event in London

The Nanotechnology Knowledge Transfer Network (NanoKTN – www.nanoktn.com), one of the UK’s primary knowledge-based networks for micro and nanotechnologies, held their first event focused on the impact that nanotechnology is delivering in the manufacture of medical devices.

In early 2012, the NanoKTN launched the Nanotechnology in Medical Devices (NiMeD) focus group aimed at researchers and manufacturers of medical devices, with the purpose of capturing and addressing all issues surrounding development of medical devices using nanotechnologies. Held in collaboration with eSTI2 (UKCRC translational infection research initiative consortium), the first NiMeD event aimed to understand the impact of nanotechnology on medical device development, and to learn and elicit the unmet needs in this field through a stimulating round table discussion.

This event was of great interest to all those wanting to learn more about the significant role that nanotechnology can play in medical device manufacture and aims to bring together companies and academics actively developing and utilising nanotechnology in medical devices.

This half day event reviewed the current status of the field and featured three case study speakers, and was followed by a facilitated discussion on needs and a road-map for moving the NiMeD focus group forward. The event concluded with a networking drinks reception sponsored by eSTI2. Confirmed speakers included eSTI2, Brunel University, Imperial College London, Cambridge Consultants and Vivacta.

In addition, with the growing use of miniaturisation technology from the semiconductor manufacturing world, we are now seeing truly life-changing nanotechnology innovations for the aging population. This is a very exciting area of development and through more of these events; we hope to raise awareness of consumer and market needs, and to accelerate the commercialisation of these new technological developments.”
