Waste production in Denmark to peak by 2030
Article Type: News From: Management of Environmental Quality: An International Journal, Volume 23, Issue 3.
Denmark's waste levels will continue to increase steadily until 2030 and then gradually fall to about 17.5 million tonnes a year, according to projections released by the government. Domestic waste recycling will rise to 35 per cent by 2020.
About 325,000 tonnes of waste currently incinerated each year will be recycled instead. Denmark has very high incineration rates. The most recently available data shows that 88 per cent of domestic waste was burnt at incinerators in 2009. According to EU waste data for 2009 released by Eurostat at the beginning of the year, Denmark also has the highest levels of municipal waste per capita. Statistics released on Thursday show waste levels went down significantly that year, especially in the building and construction sector because of the economic downturn.
