Faculty of 1000A new research tool

Faculty of 1000 is a new online research tool that highlights the most interesting papers in biology, based on the recommendations of over 1,000 leading scientists. The new service is meant to help scientists weed through the growing body of research in biology. Each month, the service's volunteers will be asked to recommend the two or three most interesting papers they have read that month. For each paper they recommend, the reviewers will assign a rating "recommended", "must read", or "exceptional" and also write a brief comment about why they think the paper is important.

NetPDCopyright protection

NetPD, a London-based company, has developed a product that uses artificial intelligence to track file-sharing activity across the Internet. Searches are carried out on the world-wide Internet Web and ftp sites, and major communities for all items nominated by the client. The searches can be repeated or refreshed as frequently as required. Results are analyzed and summarized to the client's specification and can be provided as itemized written reports, or accessed directly through online user interfaces customized for each client. Search results are used for detailed strategic planning, to assist in tactical execution, for evidence in support in major litigation, and/or as the basis of a copyright control program. See "The Chronicle of Higher Education" (http://chronicle.com) article from November 30, 2001 to read about the impact on university communities.
