XV International Conference on: Systems Science to be held at Wroclaw, Poland, 7-10 September 2004

This conference is sponsored jointly by the WOSC and the Committee of Automation and Robotics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Professor Robert Vallée (Director-General WOSC) is a member of the International Program Committee, which is chaired by Professor Z. Bubnicki (Poland).

Selected papers (or their extended versions) will be published in Systems Science (in Poland) or in Kybernetes (the official journal of WOSC).

Please note that a call for papers has been made and the deadline has now passed. Participation at the conference is encouraged and full detials are given in the Special Announcements section of this issue.

Congress on Evolutionary Epistemology, Language and Culture

WOSC members were also involved in meetings at this congress which was organised jointly by two well-known centres of the Free University of Brussels (26-28 May 2004):

The Centre for Logic and Philosophy of Science and the Centre Leo Apostel, both of the Free University of Brussels, organized a three-day congress on Evolutionary Epistemology, Language and Culture. The conference's main aim was to bring together scholars working on (the origin, variation and evolution of) language and/or culture from within the framework of Evolutionary Epistemology, especially EEM. Preference was given to those abstracts that formulate criticisms towards modularity, universal selection theories and universal Darwinism, but nevertheless adhere to an evolutionary view to study language and culture.

Topics included:

   general evolutionary epistemology (EE), especially EEM, implemented in (the origin, variation, evolution of) language and/or culture;

• •

   nonadaptive EE;

• •

   language evolution;

• •

   cultural evolution;

• •

   EE and systemstheory, self-organization, punctuated equilibrium, symbiogenesis, homeogenes;

• •

   EE and learning strategies or cultural practices, implemented in (the origin, variation, evolution of) language and/or culture; and

• •

   (criticisms towards) the units/levels of selection debate in general or implemented in the origin and/or evolution of language and/or culture.
