Building on success

Building on success

In 2002 Kybernetes enters its fourth decade of publication. It remains the world's authoritative voice of cybernetics and systems and continues to serve these communities into the twenty-first century. It has continually added new features and responded positively to the technological advances of the age, and has reflected new cybernetic and systems thinking.

Pagination will be increased to some 1,500 pages of research and development articles, technical reviews, internet commentaries, communications and forum contributions, book reviews and reports and software reviews. The "News, Conferences and Technical Reports" section will be extended, and the up-to-date "Announcements" diary and the "Special Announcements" section will provide essential information about activities and events in the fields. A wealth of papers and contributions will demonstrate the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach to systems and cybernetics. Many new authors with refreshing ideas will be published as well, of course, as the more established leaders in these fields.

Special features and issues for 2002

Some of the projected special issues to be prepared by the editorial team with the backing of distinguished Guest Editors include: "Charles Musès - Cybernetician and Mathematician"; "Evolution of Intelligence (Cognitive Ability)"; "Artificial Life Software"; "Biocybernetics" and "Management Science".

The selected publication of cybernetics and systems organisations

Many organisations and institutions publish both their academic papers and their technical reports and summaries in this journal. In particular, Kybernetes remains the official publication of the World Organisation of Systems and Cybernetics (WOSC). In 2002 we shall report extensively on the work of the organisation prior to its 12th Triannual Congress, to be held in Pittsburgh, PA, USA in March 2002. It also includes the 4th International Institute for General Systems Studies (IIGSS) Workshop. Detailed reports of the event will be published and it is expected (subject to copyright) that a selection of the most outstanding work that is presented will be included in our issues. It is planned, once again, to present the Kybernetes Research Award to the author(s) of an outstanding paper presented at the Congress.

Literati Award for Kybernetes

Emerald's Literati Club will again sponsor the Norbert Wiener Award for an outstanding paper published in Volume 30 of Kybernetes, and the Director-General of WOSC, Professor Robert Vallée, will again be the chairman of the judging panel. Contributors of particular merit will attract Highly Commended awards.

Contributions for 2002

Whilst all contributions are refereed, those submitted to the Communications and Forum section are selected for publication by our Editorial team and, in consequence, made available to readers much more quickly. Comments and alternative viewpoints on all matters pertaining to cybernetics and systems are welcomed, particularly responses to articles and papers that have appeared in the journal.

In 2002 Kybernetes will continue in its endeavours to endow cybernetics and systems with a voice of its own and to establish a lively and effective forum for the exchange of knowledge and information. This cannot, of course, be achieved without the support of our readers and we are confident that in our 31st year it will again be forthcoming.
