University of Michigan establishes an unmanned ground vehicle research center

Article Type: News From: Industrial Robot: An International Journal, Volume 36, Issue 1

With two million dollars USD in grants from the US Army’s Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC), the University in Ann Arbor, Michigan has added four new faculty members, a Master’s Degree Program and 500 m2 of additional lab space.

The center will focus on research into all aspects of ground robots, including design, propulsion, navigation and reliability. It will also examine how robots and humans interact and seek ways to improve robotic safety.

The new center will be close at hand to the Detroit Arsenal in Warren, Michigan where the US Army recently moved its ground robotic activities from Alabama. Dean of Engineering, Dave Munson, said the University intends to partner with industry and the government to develop the next-generation engineers to research and develop the next-generation of ground robots.
