A method and apparatus are described for providing low-cost, high strength, tactile sensations using an inertial actuator in a haptic feedback interface device. The device, being an actuator driving an oscillating inertial mass, uses high frequency waveforms to convey low frequency content and provides stronger tactile effects to the user.

One embodiment actuator device provides an actuator coupled to a flexure, where an inertial mass is linearly oscillated to output the tactile sensations. The host computer and/or a local device controller can generate and combine the waveforms as described.
