which appeared in Industrial Robot, Vol. 28 No. 4, 2001

Trygve Thomessen has a PhD in robotics from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim. Professor Jerje K Lien was Mr Thomessen's supervisor. The dissertation, "Robot grinding strategies based on contact force measurements" focuses on how to include force sensing and feedback to improve the performance and flexibility in robot grinding applications. Since finishing the PhD in 1992, he has been working with R&D projects mainly within robotics at the research institute, SINTEF. His research work has been published on international conferences and in international journals. In December 2000 Mr Thomessen and the third author Mr Sannaes established the company "Productive Programming Methods AS" developing new products for simplifying the programming of industrial robots. Mr Thomessen is the managing director of the company.

Terje K. Lien was born in Moland, near Arendal, Norway. He grew up in this region, and moved to Trondheim for engineering studies at Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH). After receiving his master's degree in mechanical engineering in 1988 he worked as research assistant at NTH, then he moved to SINTEF and worked as researcher in manufacturing engineering. He received his doctor's degree from NTH in 1980 with the thesis ''Path control of universal industrial robots''. He received a position as adjunct professor of robotics at NTH in 1982. In 1989 he became full time professor of manufacturing engineering at NTN U (formerly NTH) with robotics as special field. His area of work has been development of force control systems for special application robots, development of flexible, hybrid automatic-manual assembly systems, and the development of automatic manufacturing systems for small volume manufacturing. He has published more than 200 papers and articles and is the author of five textbooks in Norwegian on manufacturing and robotics. He is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Technological Science.

Per Kristian Sannaes has a MSc in production engineering from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim in 1997. After the MSc studies he worked as a scientific assistant at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim department of Production and Quality Engineering under Professor Jerje K. Lien. In 1999 he started working at the research institute SINTEF, where he worked as a research scientist focusing on robotics research. He started working as the Head of Development in Productive Programming Methods AS October 2001, a company that he formed together with Mr Thomessen in December 2000.
