This book introduces the basic functions of a service robot and discusses a number of areas in which they have been applied. The book does not claim to be comprehensive but aims to show how service robots are being used world‐wide.

Service Robots is divided into three main parts: “Products”, “Scenarios” and “Vision”. The book starts with an introduction to service robots and goes on to discuss some of the steps involved in turning an idea into a finished product. The basic functions of a service robot are also discussed.

The second part of the book, “Scenarios”, looks at service robots in action all over the world. Application areas addressed in this section include refuelling, agriculture and forestry, the construction industry, renovating, cleaning, the office, surveillance and fire fighting. The discussion is continued with service robots for sorting; hotels and cooking; marketing; hobbies and recreation; entertainment; nursing care; medicine; underwater, and space.

The final section of this book addresses the future of service robots. It covers service robots in everyday life, robots that tidy up, and a multitalented helper in the supermarket.

Service Robots is a well written and superbly presented book. Containing over 250 pictures and little technical jargon, this book is suitable for technicians, engineers and anyone who is interested in applied robotics – including younger students.
