Quick tool change on robot arms

Quick tool change on robot arms

Keywords: Robots, Robot arms

The efficient utilisation of industrial robots in the production environment is significantly increased by a new development from Stäubli's Connectors Division, the specialists in quick release couplings.

The need to invest in additional robots to perform subsidiary tasks can often be eliminated through the ability to change tools rapidly on the existing installed robot arms. The MPS range of tool changing systems provides quick and safe tool change of, for example, welding guns or riveting tools, including the automatic connection of fluids, electrics and data systems (see Plate 6).

The coupling is directly mountable on the robot flange in accordance with ISO 9409-1 A125 or A160. Locking and unlocking are controlled by compressed air and the clean break, flush face fluid couplings are designed to work on an extremely short stroke, minimising changeover times.

The system is designed on a modular basis, which can readily be adapted to provide the optimal solution for most types of application. A mechanical, play free locking system guarantees safe mechanical connection, even in the event of a pressure drop, and the force required to connect is minimal, being readily accommodated without modification to the robot arm.

The system is currently in use at both DaimlerlChrysler and Audi for off-line, sub-assembly manufacture, for example, vehicle doors, and is creating considerable interest amongst robot-based manufacturers and system integrators worldwide.

Stäubli Connectors Division are specialists in providing solutions to all coupling requirements. Manufacturing is based in France and Germany, with offices across Europe, North and South America and the Far East. The UK base is in Telford.
