Keywords Accuracy, Machining

Custom-designed, high accuracy gantry machining systems measuring up to 100m(L) x 10m(W) x 3m(H) are now available as part of a new applications-engineering service from Güdel UK Ltd.

Based on the company's extensive range of precision gantry positioning and component handling modules, the new units are particularly suitable for five-axis machining, automatic seam or stud welding, laser, water or plasma cutting operations. In addition, systems can be fitted with laser or video scanners for component inspection, reverse engineering or rapid prototyping work (see Plate 4).

The new gantry units achieve absolute positional accuracy of better than 0.1mm and can be supplied with automatic tool changers and a wide variety of inter-linked control systems to suit individual requirements. They can also be equipped with robot machining heads for complex multi-axis positioning applications.

Plate 4 Providing positional accuracy of better than 0.1mm within standard unit envelopes of 100m x 10m x 3m, Güdel's custom-engineered gantry machining systems are ideal for five-axis machining, automatic seam or stud welding laser, water or plasma cutting operations. In addition, they can be fitted with image scanners for component inspection, reverse engineering or rapid prototyping work

Each gantry unit provides extreme rigidity and utilises a rack and pinion drive to achieve maximum head traverse speeds of 10m/second and accelerations of up to 20m/second. Equipment can be engineered in a wide range of materials, including aluminium and steel, as well as high performance alloys – with or without special-purpose coatings – for use in high temperature, high humidity, dirty, corrosive or radioactive working environments.

All Güdel gantry machining systems are manufactured to rigorous ISO 9001 quality standards and incorporate automatic lubrication of rails, rollers, drive pinions and racks to ensure trouble-free operation and low-maintenance at ambient temperatures down to –20°C.
