First fruits of Nyquist and Cimetrix agreement

Following the recent announcement of its co-operation agreement in January 2000 with Cimetrix Incorporated (Utah, USA), Nyquist Industrial Control (Eindhoven, The Netherlands) has introduced its first combined motion control and I/O solution based on the NYCe product platform. The new product, the NY3512, integrates the Cimetrix Open Development Environment (CODE) software – a complete off-line/on-line machine modelling, development and control package – with an optimised version of the NYCe3000 series – a distributed digital multiple-axis motion control system that provides real-time synchronous operation (see Plate 2).

Aimed at OEM machine builders, the NY3512 with integrated CODE software will reduce time to market and component costs, while increasing software reliability and re-use in applications such as SMT, electronics assembly and robotic automation equipment.

A key feature of the combined solution is its system architecture: based on DAX-ASP core technology, the NY3512 uses a Windows NT-based PC (Windows NTâ„¢ with kernel extension) for I/O processing, machine sequencing, GUI display, path planning, and kinematics. This industrial PC is connected to a set of distributed motion controllers over an industry standard high speed FireWire (IEEE-1394) network. This architecture optimises the use of PC technology while significantly reducing machine cabling. With CODE, the machine builder's application software, machine parameters and kinematic models are designed, tested and debugged in simulation mode, which significantly reduces time to market for new machines. All software is component based, giving exposed interfaces at all levels to the OEM for easy customisation and robust end solutions.

The NY3512 can control up to 64 synchronised axes. The rich application programmers interface (API) of CODE and NYCe simplify motion programming of complex interactions between axes. The combination of CODE with NYCe creates a strategic tool for machine builders and system integrators wishing to obtain a high level of software reuse within their particular core.

The NY3512 is flexible and modular, making it ideal for OEM and system integrator applications. It includes a C/C++ function library interface, a multi-threaded applications interface with clear statediagram approach and an applications I/O interface using CAN (or other fieldbus) as well as an Ethernet TCP/IP factory link-up. A NYCeLauncher servo system toolkit is available and the option exists for vision system integration.
