Townsend Coates has become the sole UK distributor of soldering robots manufactured by the Japanese assembly tool specialist, Janome (see Plate 2). The exclusive agreement is a result of the Leicester-based distributor's outstanding sales performance on all Janome products, including a 500 per cent increase in the sale of soldering robots.

As well as robots, Janome also manufactures a range of other hand-held and benchtop production tools, such as electric screwdrivers and pick and place equipment, for which TC is the UK's leading distributor. The robots, however, have seen a significant growth in demand as the market gains awareness of their outstanding price-performance, and the range includes a highly versatile SCARA robot, suitable for applications such as dispensing, soldering, screw tightening and pick and place. According to Mike Garry, division manager for TC's production division, the use of this product by companies such as Pace Micro, exemplifies the reason why TC was chosen to represent in the UK.
"Implementing a stage of automation in an assembly operation is not straightforward, and ancillary services such as support are critical", he said. "For Pace, we not only supplied an appropriately configured product, but we also provided a full support and training programme as part of the package. Our assembly automation partner, TEC, supplied the tooling and guarding for the application, showing the importance of a properly qualified network of business partners."
