Reed Elsevier wards off threats as scientists keep publishing
The success of Reed Elseviers multi-million pound investment in the development of an online platform for scientific publications has seen the number of articles downloaded rise from 86 million in 2002 to 175 million last year and contributed to better than expected pre-tax profits of GBP1bn. The practice of “open access publishing”, in which scientists or research institutions pay for the publication of their own work and then make it freely available, does not yet appear to be having a significant impact on the companys business.

Elzevir – The name of a family of printers at Amsterdam, Leyden etc (1592-1680) famous chiefly for their editions of the classics.
