The National Library of Australia began collecting publications about Asia in the early 1950s and established a separate section with responsibility for Asian language material in 1962. The Library has developed its East Asian language collections with emphasis on modern history, politics and government, economics, sociology, customs and folklore, defence, mathematics, statistics, archaeology and fine arts.

The collections consist mainly of monographs, serials and microforms in Chinese, Japanese and Korean, although other languages including Manchu, Mongolian and Tibetan are also represented in the collections.

Over two-thirds of the monographs held are in Chinese and there are over 4,000 Chinese periodicals and newspapers. Over a quarter of the monographs are in Japanese and just under 10 per cent are in Korean.
