This issue features selected papers from the International Conference on Information Integration and Web-based Applications & Services (iiWAS2008) held in Linz, Austria, in November 24-26, 2008, which I was the PC co-chair. iiWAS2008 marked the tenth anniversary of the iiWAS conference series, which was pioneered by Ismail Khalil, the Co-Editor-in-Chief of this journal. A number of important achievements marked the tenth anniversary of iiWAS, including being endorsed by the ACM SIGWEB and the proceedings being published by the ACM press making it available in the ACM Digital Library.

International Journal of Web Information Systems (IJWIS) and iiWAS conference series have been collaborating since the inception of IJWIS five year ago, and it is also expected that this year iiWAS (iiWAS2009 to be held in December 2009 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) will have its best papers appear in a special issue in IJWIS in 2010. Five papers are included in this issue. These papers have been extended from their original versions presented at the conference. The first paper entitled “Algorithms for structure-based grouping in XML-OLAP,” by Chantola Kit, Toshiyuki Amagasa, and Hiroyuki Kitagawa from the University of Tsukuba, Japan, is an extended version of one of the award winning papers at iiWAS2008. They propose efficient algorithms for online analytical processing operations, such as roll-up, over XML data.

The second paper entitled “XML data partitioning schemes for parallel holistic twig joins,” by Imam Machdi, Toshiyuki Amagasa, and Hiroyuki Kitagawa, also from the same group at the University of Tsukuba, Japan, won the second student best paper award at iiWAS2008. In this paper, they propose parallel processing of twig join operations, especially focusing on the data partitioning strategies.

The third paper entitled “Enforcing data consistency in data integration systems by XQuery trigger service,” by Jing Lu and Bernhard Mitschang, University of Stuttgart, Germany, focuses on data integration, a common problem in XML-based applications. They particularly concentrate on the data consistency issues, where they propose an XQuery trigger service.

The fourth paper entitled “Web ontology data matching for integration: method and framework,” by Chao Wang, Jie Lu and Guangquan Zhang, University of Technology, Sydney, also focuses on data integration, in particular using the ontology approach. They develop an intelligent matching model to solve ontology matching problem. The proposed model addresses data integration issues in a distributed semantic web environment.

The fifth and final paper entitled “Providing internet connectivity and mobility management for MANETs,” by Quan Le-Trung, Paal E. Engelstad, Vinh Pham, Tor Skeie, Amirhosein Taherkordi, and Frank Eliassen from Norway, presents a collaborative project involving the University of Oslo, Telenor Research and Innovation, University of Graduate Center, and Simula Research Laboaratory, all in Norway. The paper describes functionalities on providing internet connectivity and mobility management for mobile ad hoc networks.

As a PC co-chair of iiWAS2008, as well as the Co-Editor-in-Chief of IJWIS, I would like to congratulate the authors of papers appeared in this issue for their achievements in iiWAS2008 and their inclusion in this issue of IJWIS. I would also like to thank the PC members of iiWAS2008 who conducted the initial reviewing process for the conference, the iiWAS2008 award co-chairs for selecting the best papers, and Eric Pardede, iiWAS2008 PC Co-Chair and IJWIS Assistant Editor-in-Chief, who managed this issue.
