This issue marks the beginning of the fourth volume of the International Journal of Web Information Systems (IJWIS). We start this volume by having five regular papers. The first two papers focus on XML queries, where the first article proposes XQuery algebra and the second article focuses on XML query optimization. The third and fourth papers describe web applications, particularly for web multimedia documents and intrusion detection. The final paper presents protocols for P2P distributed computing.

As IJWIS has completed the release of the first three volumes, it is perhaps the best time now to reflect some of the achievements of IJWIS to date. IJWIS started in 2005 and was initially published by Troubador Publishing UK, until the journal was taken over by Emerald, UK, early last year. Under the new publisher, Emerald, IJWIS has consequently a new cover, as well as a new web site at: www.emeraldinsight.com/ijwis.htm Last year, 21 articles covering a wide range of topics in web information systems featured in four issues of Volume 3.

Looking ahead this year, we have planned one special issue in the upcoming issue. The special issue will feature selected best papers from the 9th International Conference on Information Integration and Web-based Applications and Services, iiWAS 2007, held in Jakarta last year (www.iiwas.org/conferences/iiwas2007). The remaining issues will be regular issues.

IJWIS and iiWAS conference series have been collaborating since the inception of IJWIS three years ago. Every year, best papers of the iiWAS conference have appeared in special issues in IJWIS. Last year, iiWAS 07 conference participants also enjoyed the generosity of Emerald by receiving a one-month free online access to the contents of IJWIS. We expect that the future iiWAS conference participants will enjoy similar benefits from IJWIS. Selected best papers of iiWAS will also feature in a special issue in IJWIS. Note that the upcoming iiWAS conference will be held in November 2008 in Linz, Austria (www.iiwas.org/conferences/iiwas2008).

IJWIS has now been indexed in the DBLP server. The full table of contents of the first three volumes have been included in DBLP (www.informatik.uni-trier.de/~ley/db/journals/ijwis/index.html). We also send the table of contents of each issue as it becomes available to various mailing lists, including DBWorld, IRMA-L, Computational Sciences, ISWorld, and a few others. The editors-in-chief are currently working with the publisher to index the journal in the ISI Thomson Scientific Index and Google Scholar.

Finally, we would like to endlessly thank the editorial board members, assistant editor-in-chief, and ad hoc reviewers for their dedication to this journal. We would also like to thank the authors of the articles who have given their trust in publishing their papers in IJWIS.
