17-22 May, Phoenix, AZ, USA
Researchers, engineers, scientists architects, consultants and policy makers in universities, industries, research laboratories and government establishments are invited to participate in this event, meant as a forum for exchange of innovative ideas, leading edge concepts, new technologies and devices, ongoing research and development (R&D) efforts, prototype and demonstration projects, commercialization technologies and projects, and visions of the future related to the general theme of energy sustainability. The conference will consist of plenary talks, invited talks, panel discussions, workshops, tutorials, technical sessions, poster presentations and exhibitions. The conference provides a unique opportunity for communication and collaboration between academia, industry, and planners in the areas of solar energy, energy efficiency, renewable energy and advanced energy technologies.
The conference will also feature a special track for students interested in solar and energy efficiency consisting of technical and poster sessions, networking and a job fair. Further details are available at: www.asmeconferences.org/ES2010/index.cfm
World Climate Teach-In Day
4 June
There is a perceived need to foster awareness about climate change in schools and universities and to engage young people and future professionals in the search for local solutions for a problem with has global dimensions. Yet, although much is written and spoken about climate change at scientific circles, little information filters through other levels. Since much can be gained by using scientific information to foster the debate on climate change at schools and universities across Europe, the “World Climate Teach-In Day” will be organized, to held on the 4 June 2010.
The aims of the “World Climate Teach-In Day” are to:
- •
disseminate scientific information on climate change in a way that allow is to be broadly understood, including elements related to its environmental, social, economic and policy aspects to schools and universities around the world;
- •
raise awareness among secondary and university students on the complexity of matters related to climate change and the need for personal engagement and action;
- •
provide an opportunity to introduce projects and other initiatives being undertaken at the international but also at the regional and local level by schools, universities, government bodies, NGOs and other stakeholders; and
- •
discuss the problems, barriers, challenges and chances and potentials related to climate change both in the local and regional level but also globally.
Last but not least, the “World Climate Teach-In Day” is meant to encourage more networking and information exchange among participants and hopefully catalyse cooperation initiatives and possibly new projects. Further details are available at: www.world.climateday.net/
Bio Energy and Renewable Energy Conference

With the addition of the BC Bioenergy Network as Conference Co-Host, the tradition of leadership and excellence will continue on 8 June 2010. The event will provide a suitable platform for all the participating bioenergy companies to showcase their renewable energy systems and solutions. The conference theme is “Shifting to Biocarbons” and the conference topics are:
- •
Sustainable biocarbon resources.
- •
The biocarbon economy.
- •
Bioenergy technologies: today, tomorrow.
- •
Emerging clean technologies.
The 2010 conference will also mark the introduction of a parallel conference on emerging clean technologies and new alternative energy solutions. Further details are available at: www.bioenergyconference.org/
Engineering Education for Sustainable Development (EESD 2010) Conference
19-22 September, Göteborg, Sweden
Sustainable development requires a shift towards a society that better addresses basic human needs and the limitations of natural systems. A transformation of, e.g. mindsets, educational approaches, societal structures, technical systems and economic accounting methods is needed. Engineering education institutions can play an important role in this transformation and in the sustainable society if sustainable development becomes a framework for a redesign of the structure and goal of organizations and of pedagogical, research and cooperation approaches and methods. This conference addresses the role of engineering education in the learning for the required transformation. Abstracts that share results and experiences from R&D efforts related to engineering education in sustainable development are welcome. Some possible areas are:
- •
Learning outcomes and competencies, e.g. the relation between program goals, accreditation criteria and societal needs, and assessment of learning.
- •
Teaching and learning activities, e.g. dealing with attitudes and values or with transformative learning.
- •
Pedagogical approaches, e.g. work-integrated learning, network-based learning and problem-based learning.
- •
Curriculum transformation, e.g. embedding of sustainable development.
- •
Professional development of engineers and other groups.
- •
Institutional change, e.g. support, training and other incentives for lecturers, ESD in EMS.
- •
Campus development, e.g. using campus as a lab bench.
- •
Cooperation, e.g. interdisciplinarity, work-integrated learning, entrepreneurship and innovation.
- •
Societal change, e.g. governance, policy instruments, future role of engineering education institutions.
- •
Student involvement, e.g. student initiatives.
