Different states
In the US state of Ohio, those who kept their jobs over 2000-2004 have been working harder, according to a recent study by the Cleveland branch of the Federal Reserve. Productivity per Ohio worker rose 3.7 per cent in Ohio from 2000 to 2004, against an average gain among the states of 2.3 per cent.
Ohio’s gross state product rose 0.8 per cent during the period, compared with 1.1 at the typical state. But it lost 1.4 per cent of its jobs, compared with 0.2 per cent at the typical state.
That meant each worker had to be more productive.
Delaware workers were the most productive, increasing productivity 8.6 per cent from 2000 to 2004. Alaska was the least productive, with its productivity falling 4.5 per cent.
