Alan Cattell – Retirement as ICT Reviews Editor
Article Type: Bookshelf From: Industrial and Commercial Training, Volume 42, Issue 4
After nearly ten years as Reviews Editor for Industrial and Commercial Training I have chosen to hand over the reins in order to enjoy retirement from my life as a Senior Lecturer and Training, Learning and Development professional.
In completing my last review for ICT I chose the book Time Well Spent because the title and content neatly capture the majority of my career and my subsequent transition into an enjoyable retirement.
My role as reviews editor has also been time well spent in terms of my own professional and personal development. Access to and reading the latest books in our field has been both a privilege and an eye opener as regards the extent of developments in HRD. Besides reviewing stock learning and development “how to” books I have also tried to introduce those with a strategic flavour and which cover amongst other subjects Talent Management, Human Capital, HR Transformation and elements of Organizational Development. Perhaps the most developing area of authorship which I have observed in recent years covers “generational” topics such as global connectivity/communications, the digital revolution, generations X and Y, working longer, learning from burnout, and home working. The needs of our learners have perhaps never been so diverse and consequently difficult to meet through traditional teaching and learning strategies.
In planning the transition between myself and the new reviews editor, Nancy Rolph at Emerald, Bryan Smith, ICT editor, and I have agreed that John P. Wilson, an established author in his own right is the appropriate choice. John’s background is primarily as an academic who also has wide experience as a professionally qualified HRD manager and consultant internationally. John has also been a regular reviewer for ICT previously.
I wish John, the Editorial team at Emerald and ICT subscribers and readers all the very best in meeting the challenges of the future.
Yours in learning,
Alan CattellBingley, UK, March 2010
