BAA flies high on training improvements

Improvements in the training programmes of UK airport operator BAA have cut costs, improved the accuracy of training records and increased the number of employees who have successfully completed courses.

BAA replaced its paper-based, instructor-led training with an e-learning system. The company required that each module be custom built, that the content be realistic to the airport environment, and that it should appeal to a wide age range of engineers. All this was to be achieved on a budget of under £30 per engineer.

Productivity Point met the challenge, creating courses that were deliverable in 10-15 minutes and without the constraints of having to schedule each engineer for face-to-face training up to three months in advance or worrying about providing coverage for engineers who were attending the training.

David Parnham, the company’s engineering-training manager, said: “Productivity Point has produced a great package of courses that has caused a lot of interest around BAA. The topics can be covered quickly and so can be fitted around jobs and shifts, and the addition of humorous elements has got all the engineers talking about the e-learning, which is a big step in the right direction.”

Susannah Clarke, Productivity Point’s UK managing director, said: “It is exciting to get such positive feedback from BAA’s engineering staff. To hear that they are enthusiastic about the new training and the fact that the courses are short and to the point, easy to use and highly interactive, is right in line with our design plan.”
