Employers unveil plan to improve training in Flanders

The participation rate of 25 to 65 year-olds in continuing training in the Flanders region of Belgium has risen from 2 per cent in 1993 to 8 per cent today. However, this remains below the European average of 8.3 per cent.

Flemish Employers’ Association, the VEV, says in a report that:

  The Flemish government spends less on education and training than the European average; the government’s key tasks in the training market are not clearly defined; training is not sufficiently geared to meeting clients’ needs; and the role of sectoral training funds remains obscure.

The association argues that the government should no longer finance training organisations in Flanders, but the people undergoing training or the companies sending their employees on training courses. The association also argues that responsibility for the Belgian system of paid leave for education, still at the federal level, should be devolved to the regions.
