The third Happold Brilliant was presented to the Department of the Built Environment at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, at the annual CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) President's Awards Dinner, Merchant Taylor's Hall, London on Friday 13 October 2000. The engraved glass bowl, presented by CIBSE in recognition of high standards of excellence in the teaching of building services engineering, was presented by Eve, Lady Happold, to Gordon Hudson, on behalf of the academic staff of the department.

The Happold Brilliant annual award was introduced by CIBSE to recognise excellence in the teaching of building services engineering. The award was the idea of the late Professor Sir Edmund "Ted" Happold, and is sponsored by the Happold Trust. Ted Happold believed deeply in promoting the excellence of teaching building services engineering, and the contribution that a quality education can bring to the work, values and ideas of the engineers of the future. The award itself takes the form of a beautiful glass bowl, hand engraved to his own design by Roger Rigby.

The Happold Trust is a charity set up to promote education, training and research in the construction industry fields of engineering, design, technology and architecture. Ted Happold, founding partner of multi-disciplinary consulting engineers, Buro Happold, was responsible for establishing environmental and building services engineering within the practice. An Honorary Fellow of CIBSE, Ted was an enthusiastic, long-term supporter of the Institution.

Buro Happold is a multi-disciplinary international practice of consulting engineers, offering civil and structural engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering, quantity surveying, building services and environmental engineering, infrastructure and traffic engineering, geotechnical engineering, facade engineering, fire engineering, computational fluid dynamics analysis, access consultancy, project management, urban design and a range of specialist CAD services.

The Head of the Department of Building Services Engineering at the University of Northumberland at Newcastle is John Thornton.
