Maintenance costs continue to rise

The All-in Maintenance Cost Index rose for the second successive quarter in 3rd quarter 1999, according to the latest BMI Quarterly Briefing of Maintenance Costs[1]. This follows the slight downward trend experienced towards the end of 1998.

The main factors behind the rise have been a combination of recent private sector wage awards and materials price increases, in particular for services maintenance.

The BMI forecast is for maintenance costs to rise by 3.2 percent over the next 12 months from 3rd quarter 1999 to 3rd quarter 2000. The private sector, as in the last two years, is likely to see the largest increases (see Table I).

The BMI Index monitors the change in input costs (labour and materials) of carrying out maintenance.
