Healing the Rift
Abstract
When Frederick W. Taylor separated planning from doing in industry 50 years ago it was inevitable that a great gulf should open between workers and managers. Since that day workers have been relegated to doing while managers and Work Study men have arrogated to themselves the role of thinkers and planners. The division is implicit in the familiar definition of Work Study as ‘the systematic and objective examination and improvement of the factors which directly govern the production of operational efficiency of any specific activity’.
