Abstract

Though it has been around for almost 10 years and has over 110 installations worldwide, DOBIS has not had a great impact on the UK market since it began to be marketed by IBM's Academic Systems Marketing in 1985. One of the reasons for its slow take‐up in the UK is probably that it was not perceived as a turnkey, library‐managed system, but as one which would run on and share the resources of larger computer installations. However, at the time of its introduction into the UK, IBM announced DOBIS's availability under the Small System Executive SSX/VSE operating system. In the SSX version, it would provide facilities to help librarians without data processing skill to instal, tailor and maintain the system.
