EXECUTIVES' FORUM: Strategic Planning in an Era of Uncertainty
Abstract
Seven years ago, the economist John Kenneth Galbraith characterized ours as an age of uncertainty, and the last few years have not proved him wrong. The economy has bobbed up and down with oil shortages and oil gluts, high interest rates and high employment, and a soaring dollar and a record trade imbalance. A mere decade ago, neither psychics nor reputable economists could have foreseen these incongruities. Strategic planners and others charged with charting their company's course were humbled by the discrepancy between their plans and what events held in store for them. One might say we have been operating under that ancient Chinese curse: “May you live in interesting times.”
