Off the cuff
Abstract
IT IS CHEATING a bit to start off by seizing a sentence which you haven't read yet—since it occurs later in this issue, in Michael Pearce's virile comment on page 213—and using it as a theme for debate. But in this case I want to take the sentence deliberately out of its context.
