Abstract

AN INS is a small electronic system that is capable of navigating an aircraft precisely and reliably over thousands of miles totally independent of any reliance on position information from outside the airplane. After being supplied with initial departure point position information, an INS is capable of continuously updating for the cockpit crew extremely accurate displays of present position, ground speed, attitude and heading. In addition, an INS can provide steering information for the autopilot and flight instruments. Since it is self‐contained, an INS is not susceptible to jamming or other outside interference.
