Abstract

The usually neglected subject of onboard fires in aircraft (as distinct from post crash fires) has had attention focussed on it by the L‐1011 fire at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 1980 and the subsequent investigation. Two airlines have summarised some important points arising that are worth repeating and expanding. The first of these is that over the 20‐year period up to 1980, there were about 200 incidents of fire or smoke in flight on transport aircraft of which 40 have been categorised as accidents.
